A history rooted in entrepreneurship
Back in 1938, it all started with 3 Orscheln brothers – Ed, William, and Al Orscheln. Ed and William established a trucking business together and Al was responsible for the maintenance of their vehicles. One day when a truck driver was complaining about the parking brake on a vehicle, Al decided to take some time to figure out a better solution to the problem. From this event, the “overcenter” parking brake was developed. Patented a year later, this brake was first only installed on the family’s delivery trucks. In 1946, the brothers founded the Orscheln Brake Lever Manufacturing Company to build the brake system for sale to others. Today, Orscheln Products is still a family company, run by descendants of the 3 Orscheln brothers.
