Our Story

What began as a small Missouri family business grew into a company known for solving real-world engineering challenges.

The Orscheln family’s early ventures in transportation revealed the need for safer, more reliable vehicle controls. This insight led to the patented over-center parking brake in 1939 and the launch of Orscheln Brake Lever Manufacturing in 1946.

That same practical, problem-solving mindset guides Orscheln Products today. From the first brake lever to advanced motion-control systems used around the world, our work reflects generations of hands-on innovation and American-made craftsmanship.

Today, Orscheln Products remains a global provider of motion-control systems built on generations of innovation and Missouri-based craftsmanship.

Orscheln: A History

From a family farm, dance hall and trucking business, to a fourth-generation group of diversified companies, doing business around the world.

Origins in Missouri (1917–1928)

The Orscheln story begins in 1917 when brothers Ed and W.C. (Bill) Orscheln settled near Sturgeon, Missouri. Facing difficult farm economics, they created a supplemental business by opening a portable dance hall in 1921 called The Picnics, later renamed Orscheln Heights.

It became a major entertainment destination, hosting nationally known performers like Benny Goodman, King Oliver, and Tommy Dorsey.

To solve transportation challenges for rural patrons, the brothers converted a Model T truck into a passenger bus, eventually expanding into a freight-hauling service transporting goods between Sturgeon, Moberly, and surrounding towns.

Expansion of Transportation & the Birth of a Problem (1928–1939)

The expansion of Highway 63 in 1928 enabled broader transportation routes, and in 1931 the Orscheln Brothers Truck Line was incorporated. While operating the trucking business, the family repeatedly encountered a dangerous and costly problem: trucks losing their brakes while parked.

To solve it, Al Orscheln—maintenance supervisor for the fleet—designed and patented an over-center parking brake in 1939. This innovative mechanism, which applied magnified leverage over the driveline, became the first reliable, driver-friendly parking brake of its kind and quickly gained industry attention. This is the genesis of our forary into becoming world renowned control system manufacturers.

From Brake Levers to a Manufacturing Leader (1946–1960s)

The success of this invention led to the formation of Orscheln Brake Lever Manufacturing in 1946, the direct predecessor of today’s Orscheln Products LLC. Throughout the 1940s to 1960s, the company refined the original brake lever design, expanded production, and secured major OEM relationships.

By the late 1950s and 1960s, manufacturers such as International Harvester, General Motors Trucks, and American Motors adopted the Orscheln brake lever as optional—and eventually standard—equipment. This positioned Orscheln as the world’s leading supplier of industrial parking brake levers.

Expansion Into Complete Motion-Control Systems (1970s–2000s)

As demand grew, the company expanded beyond brake levers into a control system manufacturer who supplies:

  • Mechanical control systems
  • Control cables
  • Dipsticks
  • Aerospace controls
  • Electronic throttle pedals
  • Shifters
  • Specialty assemblies

This transformation culminated in the evolution of the business into Orscheln Products LLC, a global control system manufacturer serving on-highway, off-highway, aerospace, defense, marine, and specialty-vehicle markets. The company further strengthened its engineering and testing capabilities with acquisitions such as QuEST Rail and Glendinning Products, and by opening a state-of-the-art test laboratory in 2015.

A Global Leader Built on Practical Engineering (Current Day)

From a single patented brake lever to more than 15,000 part numbers and worldwide distribution, Orscheln Products remains as premier defined by the same principles that started it: practical engineering, safety-focused innovation, and a commitment to high-quality motion-control systems built in Missouri.
